Formation facts

  • On Max Trax, Max said Marc Rizzo did not leave Soulfly — the band decided to part ways for personal reasons, after eighteen years.
  • Rizzo said it was a healthier environment for him and his family, with time for Hail the Horns and the solo work that actually credited him.

Formation facts

  • Tony Campos, the Static-X bassist, became Soulfly's permanent low end in June 2011, with his first show booked for Lokerse that July — after months of borrowed bassists.
  • Tracking Enslaved, David Kinkade called the new songs Arise on crack — then later said it was just studio adrenaline, waking at eight to blast with Zeuss until 2 a.m.
  • Kinkade's last Soulfly show was 23 October 2012 in Bangkok. He told fans music was no longer worth the cost — he was going home to his family.

    Oct 2003 – Jul 2010

Formation facts

  • Max told a campus paper he never wanted Soulfly to be Metallica — the same four guys forever. Bring in people who catch his ear, then let the record change.
  • On 17 August 2006 at the D-Low Memorial in Tempe, Igor Cavalera walked onstage with Soulfly and played Sepultura songs with Max — their first shared stage in about a decade. He was a guest that night, not a Soulfly member.
  • On 18 July 2010 Bobby Burns tweeted that he and Soulfly had decided to part ways. The next day the band called it amicable and said Johny Chow — already playing with Max and Marc in Cavalera Conspiracy — would be loaned in until they found a permanent bassist.

Formation facts

  • Joe Nunez arrived from Chicago on a Dave Lombardo recommendation and sat down as Roy's replacement while the band prepared the follow-up to the debut.
  • In October 2001 a source close to Nunez told the press he had confronted Gloria Cavalera over a contract that barely paid between tours — and that she would not reopen it. Treat that as the attributed report it is, not a signed confession.

Formation 1 of 11

1997 – Apr 1998

Members

  • Max Cavalera
    Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
    Jan 1997 – Apr 1998
  • Jackson Bandeira
    Lead Guitar
    Jan 1997 – Apr 1998
  • Marcelo Dias
    Bass
    Jan 1997 – Apr 1998
  • Roy Mayorga
    Drums, Percussion
    Jan 1997 – Apr 1998

Formation facts

  • Max Cavalera found the word Soulfly screaming it on Deftones' Headup — a 1997 song written with Chino Moreno for Dana Wells — before he had a band of that name.
  • Roadrunner wanted something cooler, like Limp Bizkit or Korn. Max kept Soulfly anyway and said the name on French television.
  • The debut was how Max crawled out of grief after Dana and Sepultura. In the studio he still needed a song that felt like the wound — that song was Bleed.
  • Friends packed the first record: Chino, Fred Durst, Fear Factory, Benji Webbe. It sounded like a rescue party, not a supergroup stunt.
  • Jackson Bandeira — Lúcio Maia from Nação Zumbi — played the debut's lead guitar, then went home to Recife. The record is his; the world tour is not.

Studio albums

  • Soulfly (Apr 1998)
