Formation facts
- After the Dio-fronted High Voltage date was cancelled, the surviving musicians put 24 July 2010 back on the Victoria Park bill as a one-off Heaven & Hell tribute.
- The tribute lineup was Iommi, Butler, Appice, and Scott Warren, with Glenn Hughes and Jørn Lande sharing vocals. Heaven & Hell's proceeds from the show went to the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.
- During the finale of "Neon Knights," Phil Anselmo walked on as a surprise guest, sharing the song with Hughes and Lande, then leaving the stage.
- Iommi called the night the only one: a last thing for Ronnie, not a Dio-less continuation. They had not expected to play again. It was the last performance under the Heaven & Hell name.

Formation facts
- When Rhino asked Tony Iommi's camp for unused Dio-era Black Sabbath recordings, nothing was left in the vault. Iommi went back to Ronnie James Dio instead, and the two began writing new songs.
- The label had asked for two new tracks. The sessions produced three: "The Devil Cried," "Shadow of the Wind," and "Ear in the Wall" — a slow song, a mid-tempo song, and a fast one.
- Bill Ward was expected on the new recordings and the 2007 tour. On 26 November 2006 he said he would do neither, and wished Tony, Geezer, Ronnie, and Vinny well. Vinny Appice played the sessions and became Heaven & Hell's drummer.
- "The Devil Cried," "Shadow of the Wind," and "Ear in the Wall" were released as Black Sabbath songs on Black Sabbath: The Dio Years in April 2007, just as the same players prepared to take the Dio-era catalog on the road as Heaven & Hell.
- They toured as Heaven & Hell so crowds would not walk in expecting "War Pigs," "Iron Man," or "Paranoid." The name pointed at the 1980 Black Sabbath album and at a set built only from the Dio-era songs.
- Heaven & Hell's first concert was 11 March 2007 at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, opening a Canadian run before the American dates. The Dio-era Sabbath songs were the whole show.
- On 30 March 2007 they opened the American tour at Radio City Music Hall. The night was filmed and issued as Live from Radio City Music Hall, with Scott Warren — Dio's longtime keyboard player — on keyboards in the touring band.
- The reunion had been framed as a limited run. After the 2007 tours Dio said the band had gotten too good to just walk away, and they stayed together to write new music.
- The new songs were written across the Atlantic: first at Iommi's home studio in England, then at Dio's studio in Los Angeles.
- They cut the album at Rockfield Studios in Wales, the same rooms where Dio, Iommi, Butler, and Appice had made Black Sabbath's Dehumanizer seventeen years earlier.
- In the studio the record was Dio, Iommi, Butler, and Appice, with Mike Exeter adding keyboards and additional production. Onstage, Scott Warren handled keyboards during the Heaven & Hell tours.
- The Devil You Know, released by Rhino on 28 April 2009, is Heaven & Hell's only studio album. "Bible Black," one of the first songs written, became the public doorway — Dio called it the benchmark for everything that followed.
- On 30 July 2009 at Wacken, Heaven & Hell filmed a festival set later released as Neon Nights: 30 Years of Heaven & Hell, with Scott Warren again on keyboards.
- In late November 2009 Wendy Dio said Ronnie had stomach cancer and was starting treatment. She added that after he "kills this dragon," he would be back on stage. Heaven & Hell still talked as if the road would resume.
- On 4 May 2010 Heaven & Hell cancelled the coming European shows, including the original Dio-fronted High Voltage date, because Ronnie was not well enough to tour.
- Ronnie James Dio died on 16 May 2010. Iommi said his passing left a huge hole: they had not finished what they had set out to do as a band, and Ronnie had been looking forward to the European tour.
- In 2026 Rhino issued Breaking Out Of Heaven 2007-2009, a boxed look back at Dio's last chapter with Iommi, Butler, and Appice: The Devil You Know, the Radio City show, the Wacken film, and the three Dio Years studio recordings.
